Hello my lovelies,

How una dey? Well Last week was the most talked about film festival in Africa "African international film festival" AFRIFF for short. I had looked forward to this event for almost a year (maybe that was the problem). Afriff has been going on for five years now, the first edition was held in Port harcourt Rivers state, the one after Lagos state and the last two Calabar, Cross River state, but this one was held here in Lagos State. People at the festival kept saying that the problem this year had was the fact that it was hosted in Lagos state but I beg to differ. Here are the facts of the 2015 afriff festival I think everyone should know:

1) THE FESTIVAL:
There is no other festival in Nigeria/ Africa that is bigger or better than Afriff.

2) WINNING:
Winning an afriff can be very beneficial. It is also directly related to how many people come for your film viewing (how famous are you?)

3)ALL ABOUT THE ACTORS:
Afriff is designed for actors not film makers: Let me expand. Afriff treat actors like legends (which some are not ) while treating film makers like they do not matter. Film makers are made so insignificant that you will actually think that actors write their own scripts, direct and produce themselves! No offence to the actors tho, I love you guys. Let me give an example hotel accomodation: most actors actually live in Lagos but afriff organisers gave almost all of them hotel rooms to stay for the period of the festival, while film makers that had films in the festival was given exactly one (1) room for their team to share ( How does that compute!)

4) NETWORKING;
Afriff is a very good place for networking for industry people. Only problem is you can never know who is who, you know why?  The tags issued by afriff has "industry delegate" written on it, so you are not even sure who you are talking to. If they are sound engineers, editors, actors, producers, directors, or even people that just N20,000 to spent.

5) FEE:
Afriff cost N20,000 this year. In their defence most film festivals charge you for entries or even to attend. The are benefits to paying for film festival, you get perks that others are not entitled to. Like private parties, exclusive viewing, movies market place and many more. At afriff your N20,000 is totally useless! It did not matter, it only covered the soirees (as they called it ) in the evenings and the open and closing movies anyway, (BTW they only tell you this at the beginning of the festival week) even at that nobody ever checked to see if you had your tag or not. Oh by the way all the drinks and the food at the "soirees" kept running out within an hour or two into the parties.

6) OPENING MOVIE
Their choice of opening film was quite epic, kudos to the film maker but that movie was not an opening festival movie now! na wah o. I was just weak! who starts the festival will a very deep emotional movie that was quite slow to start? I did not understand that choice at all. Everyone is on a high the first day keep them on that high at least for a couple more days before you kill it.(just saying).

7)MILDRED OKWO:
Before this festival I always thought that Mildred Okwo (producer/director) had nothing much to offer me as a person, I WAS SOOOOO WRONG!!! I have never had to slap myself so badly before. She is well spoken and calm. She gave more information at this festival than any other person or group (sue me). I official will like to apologise to her for that (underestimating her). I dey hail oh.

8)MOVIES:
The movies that showed in this festival was from the good, to the bad and then the ugly. I think they did not have time to watch all the movies submitted to the festival properly, they where some really terrible movies in there.

9) MOVIES I LOVED:
For me there are some movies that made a difference to me, the showed that Africans are not playing with their craft. For the short film at least the ones I watched ( couldn't watch everything, I have a life): Encounter (really brilliantly done) only issue was that is was a little bit too long:

Henna (i loved it)
An Afrinolly short
Hex (i thought it was ok) A lot of naked bodies if you like that kind of thing. It was a slasher movie a nigerian version of "I know what you did last summer"

For feature length movies:
Tell me sweet something (love it! love it!! love it!!)
Ayanda (A breath of fresh air) I loved Oc Ukeje in it. Also love the other mechanaic's character don't know his name.

10) THE GALA:
The Afriff gala was the driest event i have ever been to, what was with the dry hosts i do not understand. They couldn't find any one better? I was really unhappy I had to leave early. Reflections won best feature length?? God is watching you guys on 5D o!

All in all I did enjoy the festival but I was really disappointed that I could not network as much as I would have loved to.
PS: I did not watch all the movies oh!!! Only mentioned the ones I liked if i watched it and it no make sense I no mention. (LOL)

Remember this is just my opnion if you thought different let me know at the comment session below.

Thank you

For the Nebos’ their regimented and quiet lives though boring to many is that which brings perfect harmony into their lives and relationship or so they think. MOVIES IN THE CINEMA (OCT 18 2015)

Hello My Darlings,

How has your weekend been? I hope it has been awesome like mine ( if awesome to you is just bingeing on movies all day). I have been a bit busy that is why i haven't written in a little while. I actually watched gbomo gbomo express a couple of weeks ago at genesis deluxe cinema at the palms but laziness would not let me write anything.

Walterbanger productions came up with this brilliant movie that I most say is very different from what we are use to in Nigeria. Lets start with what I liked about this movie (to be frank there was only a few things I didn't like) I love the depth of each character, they way the were brought to life was amazing from their clothes to their behaviour and so much more. General idea of plot was that Ramsey Noah's character a record label boss was hated by his business partner as well as one of his artists and the decided to take matters into their own hands, Osas Ajibade"s character was a rich kid that was angry with her step mother who took over her father's company after he passed away, Kiki Omeli and Gideon okeke and Gbenro Ajibade's character are petty thieves that got the wrong end of the stick. My favorite characters where kiki's and Gbenro's characters they where deep, funny and all round awesome. All the actors in this movie brought their A game.

What I didn't like in the movie was directing style, the camera angles where too ambitious which for me took away from the movie. I know the director was trying  different things with a camera but NO! it was just not working for me. Some may say I do not understand creativity (as I always say this is my opinion) I will say I do, just don't want to be turning my head sideway in other to see what is happening in a scene.
That is the only thing I didn't like.

Synopsis:
Gbomo Gbomo Express' is centred around the kidnapping of record label boss, Austin Mba and Cassandra, a beautiful socialite, after a celebratory night out at the club.
Things get increasingly complicated for the amateur kidnappers led by Francis, who has trouble keeping his girlfriend, Blessing and crazy sidekick, Filo, in check, as they shakedown Rotimi, Austin’s partner, to pay the ransom.

Directed by Walter ‘Waltbanger’ Taylaur

Starring: Ramsey Nouah, Osas Ajibade, Gbenro Ajibade, Kiki Omeli, Kenneth Okolie,Gideon Okeke, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Ikechukwu and many more

You can still see this movie at Genesis Deluxe Cinemas and Film House Cinemas

I will be rating this movie at a 9/10

Enjoy

GBOMO GBOMO EXPRESS MOVIE REVIEW (2015)

admin
,

Hello My darlings,

How are you guys doing? Yesterday was very eventful for the nollywood movie scene, they where three movie viewing. 1) Romance is overated had invites but you are asked to pay for your tickets at the door. Why? Saying you are invited to a "private viewing" then asking that I should buy a ticket (Mba nu). 2) First Lady to be truthful nobody invited me so I didnt go. 3) Special crimes unit, it was a press screening which I went for.

Now down to business the most annoying thing i found out about this series is that, it opens in December on African magic. That was super annoying for me! Why wet my appetite then tell me to wait till december (Not cool people not cool).

This series has some hiccups tho, some places had really bad lighting, the scoring guy should probably be killed (whispering* I didn't say anything oh). I found out something about nollywood people they dont know that movie scoring is a department on its own. It is not the editor's job, it a music professionals job. Get a good music producer play you movie for them and they will come up with sound and scores that will go with the movie (since we don't have professional music composers in Nigeria, if we do they will cost you an arm and a leg maybe a teeth too).

To the things I loved about the series... where do I start the opening montage is insane! Crazy I love it the guy who made it is in advertising i think he wasnt even smiling at all. The cast of this series was well chosen, not really about the star power which i must say is not lacking but the abilities of these actors. You guys know that i am really hard on actors when they do nonsense in a movie, these ones were in it fully at all times. I can not talk about Aunt Joke as usually cos enough said already about her, she is just AWESOME!! Bimbo Akintola lights up the scene anytime she walks in, I think she is one of the greatest Nigerian actresses (quote me! if dont agree OYO is your name). Adesuwa Etomi was particularly very good in this movie, i enjoyed her performance, I dont know if it is because she played a different character from what am use to seeing her in? I can not say. Wole ojo was quite good as well, he played the uptight man of few word character very well (Me likey) There are other people in this series that where also very good, infact the actors in the series i hail. People like Kehinde, Baaj, Gregory amazing job There were a few bad eggs tho.

More things loved about this series: Finally a naija movie has gun and they are holding it properly like trained officers, that was awesome. The storyline was really good too, it was a foreign concept with a side dish of full naija.

Created by Yemisi Wada, 'Special Crimes Unit squad : Lasgidi Cops,'  is produced and directed by award winning filmmaker, OLA.

The star studded series features veterans like Joke Silva, Femi Branch, Bimbo Akintola and Ekpenyong BasseyThe series also stars young and talented actors like Kehinde Bankole, Wole Ojo, Kelechi Udegbe, Adesua Etomi, andOlumide Oworu.

Synopsis:
The series is about a Special Crimes unit created and put together by the Chief Persecutor; Ore Fadeyi (Bimbo Akintola), to battle a shadow organisation whose substance is yet to be determined.
play
Over the course of the investigation the Crimes Unit battles to investigate a mercurial organisation clutching at straws and uncovering a plot to organised all crimes and ultimately take over the government of the state; Lagos state.

See trailer

It's just sad that we all have to wait for it to show in December on AFRICAN MAGIC (sad face) it could just be worth the wait but what do I know.

I will be rating this series 8/10

I MISS YOU BY UYI OMORUYI

Uyi sent me a link to this short film to review am guessing he was hoping for my tatafo version of this short film. Before I tatafo check it out:

First of all i think it is a very sad short film i guess that is the point. I thought the lighting was well done. I have a problem with the crying shot when it is a close up and her face is cut in the middle, it takes away from the moment I think you are trying to establish.

Her pregnancy wasn't bad at all I appreciated the hard work. The voice reading the monologues wasnt that intriguing it did not draw me in, there was too much effort in sounding seductive? not sure that is the word, i did not feel like being happy, or crying with the character. I loved the ending of the film it was expected but you are still shocked when you see it. I really liked it.

Generally I think it was well told visually, just a few improvement here and there.
I will give is a    6/10

SKINNY GIRL IN TRANSIT

Hello my Darlings,
How are you guys doing? Hope you are having a great week cos I am definitely having one. When your full time job is movies what can I say you tend to have fun most of the time. A friend told me about this new web series that was premiering and asked me to attend but i was so lazy that I did not go (still kicking myself on that one). This morning I decided to watch the episodes that are on youtube, and I love this show, its really hilarious. If you are cynical like me about the comedy, you should watch this one it is good.

For my good parts Mrs Ngozi Nwosu is a legend in her field, she is beautiful every time, every movie she plays the main character's mum and is so good at it. Kenneth Okolie plays the love interest of the show as usual he does not disappoint at all. He was believable, very cute as well. All the actors in this web series so far have done a good job. The technical aspect of this show was on point, I don't even have anything to say, their team knows exactly what they where doing.

Now to my bad parts I really did not like the acting from Abimbola i think she was a little over the top, I guess she was supposed to be but hey.. I thought it was much.

In all I really enjoyed the show. You should check it out.

Intervention: The plot for this series gave you the general idea what the series will be about what to expect. Abimbola's character has an early morning wake up call from her mum to talk about the fact that she is not married, borderline on her body size. (LOL This was just funny)

Work out: This episode is about Abimbola's character trying to do something about her weight problems like working out.

Blind date: In this episode we discover what she does for a living (radio host OAP) then her best friend sends her on this blind date from hell. Very funny moments in this one.

Unwanted guest: In this episode Kenneth's character comes her home to find her when she is being torture by her mom and sister. ( my best episode so far)

Hope you have as much fun as I had watching this. Will post more but you can always follow on youtube.com and search for "Skinny girl on transit" to watch.

Enjoy...

Hello My Darlings,

How was you holiday? Mine was really fun had movie weekend with a bunch of friends, sadly we did not see any Nigerian movies (sad faces all round) but I was able to watch this new series online called INDIGO. Apparently this series is supposed to be a musical, honestly am not sure what it is yet.

From my "little" knowledge on series i believe the pilot of a series should get me to want to see the rest. The series even after seeing two episodes well am not excited at all.

For my bad side, I thought a director should bring out the best in an actor, I dont think Munachi Abi had that. She is a brilliant musician as an actress, NO! I disagree totally. I hope she gets better with time. The cast line up did not suit the intended purpose, I love Shawn Faqua he is brillant, in this movie not so much. The guy (Baaj adebule)that plays munachi's ex is just too much maybe that was the idea of his character i dont know.

A question I will like to ask is why does everyone have an american accent? I weak on the matter. Everyone is so expressive this is not stage o its film (OMG).

For my good side, I think the cinematography was very good, for the technical crew more grease to your elbow.

I will post the first 3 episodes here, you can always check it out on youtube.

EPISODE 1 (PILOT)

SIDE NOTE: Whats with the shot where the guy is singing while this guy keeps walking across shot, so all we can mostly see is his butt.

EPISODE 2:

SIDE NOTE: Dear editor increasing the sound on a tv programme will enhance our ability to enjoy the movie. #justsaying

EPISODE 3:

SIDE NOTE: I didn't watch this episode... i got tired!

PS: Remember this is only my opinion...
